It used to be called Abyssinia and Eritrea used to be a part of it. It was one of the few African countries never to be successfully colonized by a European nation. There was never a country called Ethiopia. The land area that is called Ethiopia today used to be Abyssinia and Eritrea was part of Abyssinia.
