If samples of both your SP and EP tapes can be played back on other VCRs without problems, this is most likely a problem in the video playback circuits. I would see if a good cleaning would be of any help, before trying anything else. Cleaning is not liable to be of any help, but you might get lucky. If the unit is under warranty, have it repaired. If not, you are likely to find the repair cost to be higher than the cost of replacing the unit. Individual electronic components are often not replaced (or even replaceable) in consumer electronics, so repairs often require the replacement of the main circuit board. With the bench rate, this is usually more expensive than buying a new unit. However, it is becoming increasingly difficult to purchase good VCRs these days. Most of the models sold today are not as good as those sold 5 to 10 years ago.
