  • To answer my own question: Yes. I bypassed the A/C unit on my Saturn 1997 SL1 Sedan by replacing the serpentine belt with the OEM belt for a 1997 SL1 with power steering and no A/C, left the A/C pulley out of the accessory belt train, and it worked fine.. perfectly tensioned, no less. This is probably not possible with many cars however, since the Saturn 1997 series has the A/C compressor bolted on top in an area where there is extra space next to the fluid reservoir - no structural changes would have have been made to add an A/C compressor. Saturns of this age-span were designed only with two engine types, SOHC and DOHC, and everything else was identical.
