Take him to the vet. Diarrhea in a young kitten can be dangerous because it can dehydrate him quickly. Make sure you tell the vet about anything you think the kitten may have eaten. Houseplants, people food, and any number of other dangerous substances like cleansers can make a cat ill if he eats them. As for why he's not defecating in the box, it sounds like he's selecting the closest available spot when the need hits him. Solving the diarrhea problem should get him using the box again. Just make sure you use a special enzymatic cleaner you can find at the pet store to completely clean any spots he had an accident on. You do not want the rug to smell like a porta-potty to him or he's more likely to make use of it.

Get him better first. This is probably what's causing his problem. Animals can have accidents, too, just like little kids. It's worse when they're sick. This can happen at any age. As he's having this problem, make sure you're cleaning REALLY well. Stores sell specific pet odor removers--this is what you want. Make sure that the litter box is the only thing that smells like kitty poo. Once he starts feeling better, I'm sure he'll start going in the proper place again.

Get another litter box. The rule of thumb is to have one more litter box than the number of cats. There also should be at least one on every floor of the house. Also try different types of litter. Some of them are finicky. It also sounds like the kitty should be dewormed...I'd keep an eye on that as well. Good luck!

You could try confining him to where the litter box is. And also if you feed him cows or goats milk that will cause diarreah. I hope that helps some
