Shouldn't there be different genres for ghost or monster movies and gory slasher serial killer movies? Aren't they both considered horror?

Yes, I think you're right. Sometimes movies are clumped together in categories they don't belong in. The horror genre does have some subgenres as well, among them: Slasher, Gore, Vampire, etc. Here's some info from a site I like a lot: http://www.filmsite.org/horrorfilms.html

Ghosts, vampires, ghouls, zombies, werewolves, etc are usually classified as "Gothic Horror" or "Gothic Fantasy" or "Dark Fantasy". Aliens, Robots, monsters, etc are usually classified as Science fiction.
