I think that it's a very good question. A better question would be: "What do you think would happen to Iraq if the US pulled out tomorrow?"

Learning how not to agree politely and intelligently is important. My opinion is that America requires a large military presence in the Middle East to guarantee the high standard of living enjoyed in the country. Any president, party or administration that attempted to lower Americans standard of living would be politically dead. A drastically lower standard of living for the majority of Americans is the only way that an immediate divorce from the need for large amounts of cheap oil could be achieved. The Saudi's will no longer allow American troops and bases to conduct operations from their soil so now there is Iraq. My $0.02

If they do not learn how to deal with disagreement in school, then when? Do you think school should be an artificial bubble which separates kids from the larger community? Or should school prepare kids to participate in the larger community? Or, perhaps, do you think that the larger community should never disagree?
-
I do think that teachers should be allowed to ask students to do that, especially in American schools. So what if it's a controversial topic? That doesn't make the topic any less important.

i believe that the only reason we are in the war is b/c of george bush. i mean, after the twin towers attack he didnt have to attack iraq b/c not everyone in iraq wanted to destroy america. and in attacking iraq he pulled everyone in iraq into the dreadful war we are in. he has gotten many people killed. and that is not the type of example we need to set for future generations

It is controversial and it causes a lot of issues. No reason to avoid it, though.

Marking would require care, but could be done. You should not be marked on what your opinions are, but how well you have explained them, both in quality of writing and quality of argument. If the teacher marks thus, it strikes me as a very interesting assignment; if the teacher marks according to agreement with his/her own opinion, it is totally unacceptable.

Actually, I think that is is a school's responsibilty to ask contraversial questions like this. Learning about the big issues, learning to discuss these contentious issues, learning to respectfully debate and share opinions, learning why other people feel differently is a fundamental and very important aspect of a child's education. I guess many AB'ers sadly missed that aspect of their education judging by their hate filled attacks against those who disagree.

It's unnecessary. It was made under false pretenses, and we've destroyed not only our goodwill, but left Iraq, it's people, it's infrastructure, and a good portion of it's historical artifacts open to exploitation and destruction- all because of one man's Narcissim. Yes. You'll find that every student of every age will be asked to write an essay about something controversial. It's a good way to learn about them.
-
yea she should be aloud to ask that question. One thing I know for shure is that I want the war to end. My brother is over there i want him to come back!! I miss him. The question your teacher asked was really a good question to ask. It gets your mind going about all the isues over in Iraq
-
I think its important to ask questions and controversy is good it means that people actually give a s*it about the subject matter. Basically GWB wanted another war if u really look into it as soon as 9/11 happened he was looking into attacking Iraq. The british did the thing we usually do and feel guilty bout wwII and so just agree blindly.
-
i also think its a good question and i disagree with the war in iraq 100% percent, i can not think of one single legitimate reason we invaded iraq
-
I think the war is pointless. We are there for no legitimate reason at all. I like that your teacher asked this. School is supposed to help you get ready for the 'real world' and this is a good way to do that. Research what 'facts' the media gives you and form your own opinion, learn to express your view points, etc.
-
Asking students questions like this should be encouraged. The entire makeup of this country is a competition in ideas, adversarial and you need to know that. You should also learn that the system is non violent and it is NOT personal. Just because you believe the way you do doesn't mean the other guy does. Take away the other guys freedom to speak and you take away you're own. Your teacher is to be commented. You've obviously learned about much more than the war in Iraq.

This makes me laugh, our own politicians can't even have a debate without going to war and they expect school kids to have a fair debate, oh what irony.
