Question

Help answer this question below.

I suggested on of my more talented previous co-workers for a job at my new job, who proceded to excell and in comparison made me look bad. Was that a stupid career move? I just thought I was doing the right thing.

It was a good move - you proved to your boss that you can recognize talent and that is an asset to your employer. Now, get to work on living up to the skill level of your new co-worker - you can excel, too!

When it comes to business environments, I guess besides when it comes to something that requires teamwork, you need to be a little selfish.

well it could have worked the other way around ,the co-worker could have slacked off and made you look bad also. The way I look at it you did a good thing and what comes around goes around, so you will get what you deserve, just not necessarily how you thought it would happen.

How is he/she making you look bad? It doesnt matter.
You did a good thing, people dont intentially make other people look bad just so they can succeed.
Some do however, when that happens I suggest you look past that and do your best according to how you see it. Dont look at it from a competition percpective. If you do this you would bent on doing WHATEVER it takes to make him/her look bad and you will loose sight on doing what is good for yourself.
