  • Beg the question Means to avoid an issue. In particular, it means to avoid answering a question by taking as an assumption something, which has not been proven. It is a debater’s phrase, and goes back to the time of Shakespeare. Unfortunately, today, writers using the phrase mean it as a substitution for: "which leads to this question..." and, unfortunately, most readers today interpret it likewise. Paul V. Hartman
