Origami is a Japanese word, a compound of ORI, "to fold", and KAMI, "paper." For thousands of years, origami has been a part of Japanese culture. And goes back even further in China, where paper originated. These designs are for beginners and children and may not be what you are searching for.

I have a book I like for origami :"Origami" by Hideaki Sakata. It has a flying dove, nesting crane, flapping crane, swan, seal, whale, tortoise, goldfish, rabbit, and sitting birds. The pictures are very colorful and bright with easy directions. This would be easier for me instead of having my computer on for a long while.

Depending on the cultural makeup of your community, the availability of a specialist in a craft like Origami can be quite a prize. If there is a cultural center or museum in your vicinity, an annual or seasonal activity may take place that brings an artist in this specialized paper craft to you.

The Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens, the cities of Pasadena, CA and Alhambra, CA have parade activities associated with the Chinese New Year, and local public libraries for the region often host related activities, which may include the craft of Origami. Of course the public library system is an excellent resource for books on Origami. General non-fiction reference books exist on the topics of paper making as well as paper folding. And several children's stories integrate the beloved Origami art form. This can also inspire free demonstrations of the craft, so stay abreast of your local library's monthy activity calendar.

Some Origami forms are particular to an occasion. I first enjoyed making paper boxes and balloons when introduced to Origami by a Japanese exchange student which my family once hosted for a summer. This is the "practical" Origami that is less frequently seen in the popular discussions of creating 3-D shapes with paper. As an activity in preparation for Japan's celebration of Girl's Day, the Japanese American National Museum, located in Los Angeles, CA (http://www.janm.org) sponsors an entire weekend workshop in the creation of hinamatsuri origami dolls. The crane (bird) shape also is widely recognized, and has an interesting connection to the remembrance of one atomic bomb survivor.
