Help answer this question below.
Dogs are pack animals. They are designed for the rough and tumble of communal living. Unless either is aggressive there is no need to keep them separate. The uterus is well designed and protects its payload more than well enough.
Do separate them at whelping time, though.
It's a good idea because you don't want the females puppies to get hurt while her and the male are playing. Make sure you keep both mother and father comfortable during the pregnancy. Make sure that the mother and father get to see eachother quite often though because then they won't get lonely for eachother. Don't try and "divorce" them. I hope the puppies do great!(what kind are they?)
I always keep my pregnant females with the pack (I have 17 dogs, so yes it's a pack LOL). I've never had a problem. Generally when the bitches are in heavy whelp they limit their activity themselves. I'm always careful so that they don't put themselves in danger. (Like walking along the back of the couch, running up and down stairs - a BIG no-no.)
So, yes, I think it's quite safe to leave your Mom and Dad-to-be together. Seperate when signs of labor start. Once puppies are born, don't allow dad around the babies for awhile. Mom and dad can still be together when they are outside to potty or in the house, but dad shouldn't be allowed near the babies until they are a little older. If he's allowed, the mom could get aggressive or become extremely worried.
I have known people to allow their male dogs with young puppies... but remember, dogs are ANIMALS. Even though we give them cutsie voices, and names, when it comes down to it, their animals with insticts.... you can't predict what will happen. Be careful.
