  • If the nose of the parakeet is brown then the parakeet is usually female. However, if the blue nose lays the egg call a parakeet doctor. In the case of baby chicks the wing is a way to tell. A smooth wing that appears to fan out is female. A messy wing that doesn't fan out is male. This method could also apply to parakeets.
  • Not all Female parakeets have a brown cere...some are a muted white and bluish color. Generally, the females' ceres have a scaley appearance while the male cere appears smooth. Most males have a very puplish blue cere when mature. However, lighter colored males often have a pink cere. As stated, if the cere is smooth and consistent in color in mature keets, it is probably male. Scaley or muted ceres tend to be female. Also, too, females tend to be more aggressive than males. And if you see a bird lay an egg, you know you've got a female! (LOL) You don't need a male to get eggs, but they won't hatch without Daddy's contribution!!
  • This is an add-on to my previous answer, a clarification: Most mature males have a VERY DARK purplish blue cere in most cases. Often yellow and white mature male keets have a VERY LIGHT PINK cere. As stated, the male cere is smooth and consistent in color. Mature females may have a white, tan, or brown cere, and occasionally the scaley or muted light bluish cere, generally (not always) with a more scaley appearance.
