Perhaps your bank denied the transaction suspecting fraud. I think you should call them and see.

Credit card companies have many rules which they apply in allowing or disallowing the use of a credit card in a different situation. The fact that your card has been rejected doesn't necessarily means that it is faulty, only that they viewed a partiular transaction as dubious. For example, if you have previously bought stuff from Amazon, and it is being sent to the address to which it was previously sent, that will give a pretty high level of confidence that your card is not stolen. But if you have never used play.com before, they don't have that reassurance. Were the goods to be dispatched to your billing address? If not, that adds to the suspicion. In some way, the sum total of those suspicions has exceeded some invisible, never revealed, threshold, and they have decided to play safe.
