There is a lot of conjecture about this, but there are several popular theories. 1. Leviathan was a dinosaur still alive during Job's time (Remember that he lived around the same time as Abraham). Some have ventured to identify what species of dinosaur it was. 2. Leviathan was a crocodile or similar beast - possibly a Nile Crocodile. 3. Leviathan was a dragon (if there ever existed such a thing). The first two are the main theories of the mainstream Christian church, though I've heard a few people say they think it's a dragon...

In Job 41 we see the leviathan: -breathes fire (v. 19-21) -has airtight scales (v. 15) -hard flesh (v. 23) -has a strong (long?) neck (v. 22) and huge teeth (v. 14) -dwells deep in the sea (v. 31-32) -is seemingly invulnerable to swords, spears, darts, habergeons, iron, brass, arrows, slingstones, darts, and spears (v. 26-29) -is big enough to play with ships (Ps. 104:26) -seemingly won't be destroyed until the end of the earth (Is. 27:1) Now, if that doesn't fit the description of a dragon, I don't know what does. I don't know of any crocodiles that breath fire, play with ships, dwell deep in the sea, or are invulnerable to so many weapons. There are dragon legends in ancient civilizations all around the world. Also, their basic body structure is very similar to that of a plesiosaur or ichthyosaurus (I used to study dinosaurs heavily as a kid) and who's to say such dinosaurs didn't have airtight scales or breathe fire? Of course evolution (macroevolution to be exact, not micro, which is proveable) says dinosaurs weren't around so recently.

A 'Leviathan' is what they called Dragons, and Dragon's are what we call Dinosaurs (yes, the fire breathing ones). They dwelled here on earth with us but the more the population grew the more inconvenient they were to have around, so they were hunted.(slay the dragon)The 'Behemoth' was the vegetarian non-fire breathing dinosaur. As the human population grew, the dinosaur population died. By the way, lizards never stop growing as long as they live. If a lizard were very old, he would be very large.

Any great sea or land monster, e.g. the crocodile, either as an actual creature (Job 41:1), or as symbolic of a nation (Ps 74:14): a large serpent (Isa. 27:1)

LEVIATHAN in the Old Testament refers to a Demon like an enormous snake/Dragon like creature. .

Since, with the exception of Job 3:8, the references mention water in connection with it, Leviathan appears to signify some form of aquatic creature of great proportions and strength, although not necessarily of one specific kind. Psalm 104:25, 26 describes it as cavorting in the sea where ships travel, and for this reason many suggest that the term here applies to some type of whale. Though whales are rare in the Mediterranean, they are not unknown there, and parts of two whale skeletons can be found in a museum at Beirut in Lebanon. An American Translation here says “crocodile” instead of Leviathan. The description of “Leviathan” at Job 41:1-34 aptly fits the crocodile, and the “sea” of verse 31 may refer to a river such as the Nile or another body of fresh water.

I gotta agree with everybody else here... "Leviathan" as I have been taught was a crocodile... BUT It is SUPPOSEDLY thought of some type of river monster or dinosauer if what Job 41 says is or WAS true I WOULD NOT want to mess with that critter! I just had another thought... MAYBE it was sometype of Hippo... I guess I won't find out too soon...

he is talking of the beast or animals that were not specifically named, but we know they were huge, moster, whale, etc.
