It's the name of an island near Cape Hatteras in the outer banks....The only clue they had of the lost colony 100+ men, women and children that disappeared on Roanoke island in 1590 was the words "CROATOAN" carved in a tree..They searched Croatoan island but never found anyone, it's a mystery to this day... http://nativeamericanfirstnationshistory.suite101.com/article.cfm/croatoan_and_the_mystery_of_roanok
