  • Had the same problem with my ford econovan (1996) about 3 months ago. I took the chance and went to the wrecker and bought a replacement and asked for directions on how to fit it. So I replaced it and all good now. Had I have gone to an auto elec first, I would have been charged a min of $25 for a quote. The replacement cost me $55 AUD.
  • There is a resister block that includes a thermal fuse in the vent under glove compartment on passenger side. You have to remove the foam lining to get to vent. The usual cause for this failure is a clogged pollen filter (located under cowling in front of windshield) which reduces air flow to cool resistor. The resistor is used to bleed off excess heat when fan is on speeds other than high. It has a fuse that blows if it gets too hot to keep the resister from melting and possibly catching fire. The fuse blows causing the lower speeds to fail to work. You should have high speed only if this is the cause. There was a recall on the dash fan speed selector. Problem with that is the high speed fan setting fails and Ford considered it a safety hazard for defrosting windows properly. Double check your chassis fuse under the steering wheel. When my resister fuse failed it blew the fuse on the fuse block too. I replaced the fuse and had high speed only, replaced the resister block and all speeds back to normal. Ford MSRP for the fuse block is about $15. Hope this helps!

  • How do I change the resistor block and where is it located?
  • In 1999, Ford had a recall program. In some of the affected vehicles, the blower switch or resistor may develop increased resistance which could potentially prevent the blower from operating on some speeds. AFFECTED VEHICLES Certain 1995 through 1998 model year Ford Contour and Mercury Mystique vehicles built from July 1, 1995 through December 31, 1997. Go to http://www.fordcontour.org/recalls/99m07.htm for a complete description of replacement and parts. As a note, I only replaced the resistor and blower switch and not the pigtails. I assume they'll go out again but it was only $15 for the switch and $40 for the resistor from autozone or checker auto vs. $90 for everything from a Ford Dealer.
