  • Live rock is not a must but instead is just another thing you gotta worry about. here are some who say that any problems will show up first in the live rock. Others claim that the rock is more tolerant and doesn't show any symptoms till it is too late and then you got the added problem of the rock going bad and affecting the other critters. In mt opinion, and it just an opinion, live rock is a prestige thing. Look how I have live rock in my "balanced" aquarium Balanced that is if you discount all the mechanical. chemical, and biological filters. The chemicals I add to remove other chemicals. The scum skimmer, the scum generator, the ozone generator the ozone filter etc etc. If a feshwater aquarium is a glass box that you throw money into, a sat water one is a bok that you sink a small fortune into.
  • live rock is a very beneficial part of a saltwater tanks filtration system. It tends to have tons of living organisms in it such a plankton, copepods, amphepods, and very beneficial bacteria. It serves as a great biological filter as long as you have a lot of flow. It also serves as small bits of food for you corals and fish, and a sitting place for many of your corals.
