  • A film is on average one and a half to two hours long and in this time frame scenes have to be selected on their relevence to the plot or character development. Seeing a character go to the toilet, brush their teeth, pick their nose would not only be a waste of time but it may turn people off. Sometimes though a movie might show a character do normal things like take a shower or brush their teeth so the audience can relate to them and they then don't seem so fake. The reason they would show teeth brushing over toilet scenes would all be a matter of taste. However if you want to see a toilet scene and an excellent movie, see Stanley Kubrick's "Eyes Wide Shut". Nicole Kidman's character uses the toilet in the opening scenes. The rest of the movie is worth a watch too!
  • Movies, like other forms of drama (novels, plays, etc...), are divided into a series of acts and scenes; or, in the case of novels, chapters. Each scene is intended to further the story in some way; be it the escalation of the plot or the fleshing out of characters. Though trips to the toilet are a common event in life, it isn't hard to imagine why a restroom wouldn't be the most common setting to further the plot of a story. If you weren't referring to the rarity of restroom scenes, but the lack of characters going to the restroom, consider the effect it would have on the story. A screenplay littered with characters going to the restroom would most likely be distracting; if only for it's rarity.
