One should respond "promptly, perhaps that same day." So, if you don't respond the same day, a good idea would be to respond the next day.

If a date is not specified, yet the host has written R.S.V.P. on the invitation, good manners would be to contact the host as soon as you get the invitation.

One should certainly reply as promptly as possible, but if it will be more than a few days until you can do so call the sender and ask them when they will need an answer by. In the case of events like wedding that take a lot of pre-planning and where there might be a secondary guestlist (those who didn't make the final cut), a prompt reply is very important. However, in the case of less formal events like a small birthday party the RSVP is most likely to ensure that the host does not buy too much or too little food (and knows that there will be at least someone coming). In that case, even a few days notice might be ok, but check with the host first.
