  • When I was about 13, some 47 years ago, I went with Boy Scouts from my area from southeast Alabama to CHiago, then on to Cimarron, New Mexico. It was boring, but I was about 13, after all. Thinking back, it was not unpleasant. The dining car was not up to specs - meaning: not enough of the kinds of food we liked. It was crowded, meaning we had to sleep in all kinds of arrangements, but we got to move around and carry on with each other. I'd do it again, given the chance. Definitely preferred over bus. One main thing learned and proven time and time again - planes do save money by requiring less for meals and lodging due to their speedy delivery, depending on personal buying habits and need for luxury.
  • we have some fantastic railtrips you can take over here in Australia, from one side of the country to the other ..some of the longest flatest straightest in the world ..across deserts ...up along the coasts and rainforrest...to the dead centre and the outback ....over uo and under mountains , back in the 70's it was the thing to do ..hop a train (it was dirt cheap) and go to anywhere and you found new friends all along the way and some even became life long friends to boot ..but now they have taken all the fun out of it (bloody rules) and its not so cheap anymore ....lol but still ...its a great way to travel
  • My husband and I went across and back by two different routes by Amtrak. We loved it though we did go first class because we wanted to be able to sleep well since it takes 3 days to go across from LA to Syracuse New York and it comes with all your meals. We were treated royally. They even prepare your bed for you at night while you are dining:-) We went by the Southwest Chief through New Mexico up to Chicago to NY and came back by way of Colorado and Lake Tahoe to San Francisco up Donner Pass in the snow. We chose those routes so we would be awake during the most dramatic pretty scenery. It worked! The trip was awesome and one we would love to take again and again. The stint from Syracuse to Chicago we didn't do first class and still enojy9ed the trip. Loved the scenery and loved the people. Had a great time!!!
