I had it, it went away in just over a week. I went to the doctor after a week, but seriously, the next day it had almost completely gone away and the day after it was gone. I'd say see at a week how you feel. Definitely go after a week and a half. If you have trouble breathing or eating (due to the constriction) see the doctor earlier.

The absolute number one thing you do for laryngitis is not talking, not even whispering. Carry a pad around with you and communicate by writing or sign language or just stay the heck away from everybody. Other than that, a hot-steam vaporizer might help. Eucalyptus drops feel good at the time but actually prolong the problem. If your throat feels constricted and feels like it's getting more so, you probably have an actual infection instead of just an inflammation and may need a prescription. My throat once felt like it was swelling shut. I got penicillin and it stopped getting worse immediately. Of course I've had problems with my throat all of my life. People keep threatening to cut it.
