If you are a family type, not looking for the best surf spot, just south of the city of Huntington Beach is Huntington Beach State Park. It used to be free for camping in an RV or in a tent on the beach. They have concrete fire rings, rest rooms and showers every 1/4 mile or so, lifeguards during daytime, and they keep it very clean. Take Hwy 39 to PCH and go south about two miles.

The beach at Dana Point Harbor right at the end of the OCTA's 70 bus route going east is a good one. So is Balboa Beach since it has a good beach with fire pits (I think) and the whole area to walk around for shops and things to do.
