  • As everyone will say, it stands for District of Columbia. Columbia is an informal name for the United States, although we don't use it very much, because it causes confusion with regard to the nation that is really named Columbia.

  • The District of Columbia was originally a square, encompassing parts of Maryland and Visrginia. This was done by Hamilton to get the South to agree to his economic and financial plans, which the South opposed. The idea was that the South would have more influence in the U.S. because of the capital being in the South. Of course, that never helped the South There were originally three municipalities within the District of Columbia: Washington, Georgetown and Alexandria. When the Visrginia part of the District was returned by Congress to Virginia in 1846, Alexandria went with it. Eventually, Washington became coterminuos with the District and Georgetown was subsumed by Washington.
