    Clearly composing and sharing your ideas is a skill that requires practice.

    There is little emphasis on this skill these days, and it shows.

    Lack of vocabulary is another problem.

    Spelling or lack thereof is another issue.

    Lack of practice. Teachers are too busy with busywork and simple-minded true/false, fill-in-the-blank, multiple-choice questions to assign (and have to grade!) "essay" questions and answers. This is primarily English (and other language) teachers, of course, but there should be essay questions and answers to all kinds of subjects, including Math, Shop, even Phys Ed.

    "Explain the rules of dodge-ball" would be a good PE question. If only to make kids think about "how do I present this"?
