  • Wow, no one even took a stab at this? Hmm, I would guess, not knowing anything about the cultural significance of elves to German culture or the nuances of "Lied", that it has something to do with the ones with the horns as elves and being different and somewhat magical in a sense and that... There's a song that is common throughout it? In the end I dunno, but at the same time it just kind of fits. Kind of like how "Full Metal Panic!" doesn't really have anything to do with the show, but it still fits well once you've watched it.
  • Its probably kind of late for an answer, but I'm pretty sure that the reason for this title is Kotha's music box. The one he showed Lucy when he was a child, and only she liked it too. It is also the melody that always comes in the beginning. In German, the word Lied could also just stand for melody.
  • I believe it is because Lynn Okamoto was somewhat inspired by the poem ElfenLied and even includes the poem in the manga during the most emotional scene (or at least the scene I cried and still cry the most through). Also the term sipilet is used in the poem and in the anime / manga it is used as the institution's word for Diclonius born of carriers.
  • What I thought of was the last words: "Lilies of Purity". Where the Virgin Mary were signified. It also meant that a woman would want to lose her virginity to her husband. Somehow Lucy being naked in the beginning kind of signified that, and how infants born were already made into diclonius. To me, somehow it meant how pure a girl can be which is way to opposing to Lucy, who find killing is a relief of jealousy. Anyway Lucy+Kohta forever.
  • elfenlied means elf song in dutch too
