Question

Help answer this question below.

When I turn the heat on at home, the main floor gets very warm but upstairs stays cold. The vents are open upstairs so why is it not heating up properly like it does downstairs? Same goes for air conditioning, it gets cool on main floor but not upstairs.

That's odd, because heat rises, regardless of where the vents are the upstairs is usually warmer. Have you had your ducts cleaned? There might be a blockage. You could also turn on your ceiling fans upstairs (in reverse, of course) to suck the warm air upward.

The location of the "return" air grilles?

The return air locations are important as the supply grilles.
