    When I was a child that was what we called big black beetles. That's the only time I've ever heard the word.

    It's a surname. According to ancestry.com, here is the origin:
    Blacklock
    Northern English: nickname for someone with dark hair, Middle English blakelok, from Old English blæc ‘black’, ‘dark’ + locc ‘lock (of hair)’. Although blake might mean either ‘dark’ or ‘fair’ (see Blake), the meaning ‘dark hair’ is the most probable since this name contrasts with Whitlock.
