Why can home DVD players read scratched discs that a laptop DVD player can't?

    First guess: different transports. The design of the transport affects its ability to read data reliably, its resistance to vibration, and its error handling ability. No two disk defects are the same, so there is no consistency in how two different transports operate. Some transports may do a poor job of reading a disk, but their shortcomings are partially disguised by a good error-correction algorithm. The same transport with a different error-correction algorithm may perform differently. Error correction may not be invisible to the eyes and, particularly, to the ears.

    Second guess: the laser lens in the portable player's transport is dirty, leaving it unable to read disks properly. Portable devices are usually exposed to more dirt than devices on the shelf at home. Cleaning the laser with a quality cleaning disk could help. I would suggest one similar in design to the Milty CD cleaner, which uses wet and dry brushes to clean the laser lens (http://www.milty.co.uk/mediacar.htm).

    I do have to say that more expensive transports work better than cheap ones. Consider the transports that cost many times what a run-of-the-mill DVD player costs: quality costs money. Cheap electronics may be cheap for reasons that have little to do with the cost of labour where they are manufactured.
