Well, I believe there are two kinds of recruiting; One is the obnoxious-I-want-to-do-this-so-I-don't-go-to-hell and my-religion-makes-me-better-than-you. Two is the I-really-want-to-save-this-person-and-my-beliefs-can-help-them and I-believe-in-this-I-wonder-who-else-would-if-I-spread-the-word. I like two.

Money. Power. They think they're "saving" them.

Some people are truly sincere in wanting others to know the peace they feel. Others just do it because their religious leaders made it a requirement. (how else do they expand their power/tithing base?)(oh yeah by banning birth control) I give the people who come to my door the benefit of the doubt and say no thank you with all the graciousness I can muster.

There must be as many reasons for trying to "recruit" people to one's beliefs as there are believers. Each person has his/her own personal reasons for doing so. I can't answer for individuals other than myself, but I can answer for Christians as a group. The most basic reason Christians go out and preach and teach the Gospel, a word which means Good News, is because it's just that--Good News! We want to spread the word that the chains of bondage to sin are broken, and we have been set free. The ransom has been paid by God, Himself. We are no longer slaves to the flesh. We can have everlasting life in heaven in fellowship with God, and we can have a better life while here on earth full of hope and peace. Who wouldn't want to share that kind of news? The other basic reason is that Christians are commanded in the Bible to spread the Gospel. It is the God-given duty of each believer to share the love of Christ with his/her fellow man. It's the love of Christ that we should be preaching by the way we live our lives as well as by the words of our mouth. The most effective way to spread the good news is by living a life full of the love of Christ. By loving our neighbors as ourselves, loving God above all things and putting Him first, and living according to God's will, the love God has for us will show forth in our lives and draw people to Him better than any sermon, pamplet, or testamony ever will.

Quite often they either: A) Believe it is their religious duty B) Think they are saving other people's souls C) Want to leech money off them D) Want a larger attendance at their meetings, etc In my experience, there's a lot more of A and C/D than B unfortunately : ( (Though of course, there 'are' people who do it because of B)

It's my job. God told me to save as many people as possible. I'm not very good at it. I don't think people would listen to me. And I think I should be setting a better example too. God also said that if people don't want to listen to me then I shouldn't keep hassling them and I should just walk away instead. Sometimes God thinks, "Bugger it", comes down and totally spins out some non-believer and they become the most devoted religious people you ever meet. But if he did this all the time then we'd just take him for granted, like we do with the rest of his creation.
