Dante's Inferno is an epic poem, written in the early 1300's. Or rather, it's the first part of a very large epic poem - The Divine Comedy Of Dante Alighieri, where the narrator(the author) goes through all the different froms of the after life, as seen by the Catholics. In this first part, he goes through Hell, led by fellow epic poem autor, Virgil.
