My basic idea to leave it blank it because if you want to make a graph, group, or a chart, you can organize them in rows and columns. This can help organize some datacharts better.

    Ex.

    A1 B1 C1 D1 E1

    1 Blank
    2
    3
    4
    5
    6

      You shouldn't necessarily.

As has been pointed out in other answers, there are circumstances under which there isn't anything that makes sense to put in that cell, but this doesn't apply to all cases.

If you're making a spreadsheet where it makes sense to use cell A1, then go ahead and use cell A1; there's no reason not to.

You don't have to. Sometimes it makes sense sometimes it doesn't. Good examples above. I often use cell A1 as I do alot of work with pivot tables and the data just slots into that cell.

It really depends what you are doing.

I haven't heard of this convention, but if you have a row of headings in Row 1 (months, for example) and a list of headings in column A (income, for example) cell A1 would quite naturally be left blank, as there would be no logical value to put into it.

I very often have a Title in cell A1, which I merge with adjacent cells to centralise it above the data entry section.
