A tennis match is divided in "sets" and sets are divided in "games".

Points are counted the following way: 15-30-40-Game (so you need 4 points in order to win a game, unless the score is 40-40 (called "deuce")in which case you have to win by a 2-points difference, this is an advantage point plus a final point).

Whoever reaches 6 "games" wins the "set", but only with a 2-games difference or more, this is at least 6-4. If score in "games" is 6-5 then another "game" is played. If the result is 7-5 the "set" ends. If the result is 6-6 then you play a "tie-break".

A "tie-break" is like a normal "game" but is played to 7 points. Again the 2-point difference applies, so you have to win at least 7-5 or keep playing until the difference is 2 (i.e 10-8).

A regular tennis match is played to the best of 3 "sets". So you win always with 2, but in case someone wins 2 in a row the third set is not played.

In professional championships, for the semifinals and the final, men usually play to the best of 5. This is you have to win 3 out of 5 "sets".

Can seem complicated, but if you print this and follow a tennis match on TV you will get the hang of it pretty quick.

    Enjoy!!
