Question

Help answer this question below.

Why does the DMV charge a late fee to renew an expired drivers license? Why do they care when it is renewed? If they can get away with charging a late fee then why don't they send a reminder before the license expires?

It's all and ONLY about the Money $ - We could gather up and have a meeting and talk about things like this till we are blue in the face but as long as the checks keep clearing and the wallets never close that is all they care about.

We get reminders where I live. 2 months before they expire I think. Sounds like gouging.

Hey, that really sucks, they make up their own rules. I wonder what the deal is with registrations?

Because our states are out to rip us off. All they want is more money to spend.
A late fee???? Give me a break.
They do send a reminder in my state.
But when you work Mon-Fri 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, there is no way to make it to the DMV before they close. Mine is due in February. I actually misplaced mine a year or so ago. I hope I don't get pulled over.

In most states, the expiration of a drivers license, is the responsibility of the driver, not the state.

A persons drivers license is a privilege, not a right.

The same applies to auto license plates. its up to the individual to remember to renew the plate, just like the drivers license.

Each state can pass laws, governing late fees.

They do send reminders in Virginia... where do you live? It's possible that the address they have on record for you is no longer valid, but it's still your responsibility to renew your license. The expiration date is right on it, so you can't claim ignorance.
