  • I agree with both, but have found the patrilineal descent easier to trace in my own personal family tree.
  • Matrilineal because you only get mitochondrial DNA from you mother's side. And Mitochondrial DNA goes down the line of the mother unchanged for like over 3,000 years. So if you really think about it you have the same exact DNA as your mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and so on and so on. What a legacy, right? Nuclear DNA, on the other hand, which you get 50/50 from you mother and your father mutates like crazy and doesn't last long after you die. Mitochondrial DNA does, that's how they can find out where old human bones originated. So when it comes to DNA ancestry is traced through matrilineal descent.
