I think that you are either naive or guilty of racism in your question. The UK consists of 4 countries, Scotland , Nortern Ireland, Wales and England and all 4 are divided into counties. On saying that I am an Englishman and i live in the Vale of Glamorgan in Wales!

I live in Bristol in the South West. It was in incorporated into the county of Avon for about 20 years but Avon doesn't exist any more and Bristol is back to being a city and county. There are still some relics of Avon in the names of the police and fire services and a lot of other private and public services. By the way, Avon is often mispronounced and should be pronounced Ay-vn (like haven) (not Ay-von like the comsetics). This goes for Stratford on Avon too.
