If I'm trying to get a job as a programmer, what programming languages should I be fairly proficient in? I'm decent in C++ and beginning to learn LISP, but should I also learn PHP and MySQL?

It would depend on what field you are going in. C++ would be sufficient for most jobs. LISP would be for scientific research and AI, PHP and MySQL if you wanted to do Internet related jobs as well as PERL and maybe XML. Game companies use programmers who are sufficient in C and assembly. The best advice would be to check out the companies that you want to work for that have openings for programmers or software engineers and see what the requirements are.

What do you want to do specificaly?

There is no one job called "programmer". There are lots of different programmers.

You need PHP, JSP, and/or ASP.NET if you plan on developing web-based applications. If you plan on writing desktop applications they won't help you.

C++ is the main programming language for desktop applications, but many companies have a large financial investment in internally developed applications created in other languages, like Microsoft Visual Basic or even Delphi (Pascal).

If your focus is Microsoft, I'd recommend C#. It's easier and more elegant than C++, and C# is the primary language for Vista development.

Java is another option- many companies focus on Java development.

There are also assorted industry-specific rapid development tools. I worked in training development, so we used Authorware, ToolBook, and a few others.

Databases are used in all kinds of applications, so you need to learn some SQL, but database specialists spend their whole careers just within Oracle or SQL Server, creating database structures, stored queries, etc without ever using any external programming languages at all.

You need to pick a specialization first!

You want a job? Learn .NET - I have been programming in VB.NET and C# since the beta in 2001. I have over 5 years experience in it now and my resume speaks for itself. Whenever I turn it on, the calls and emails start flooding in, the market is HOT for it right now and I don't see that ending soon with all the legacy apps being ported over. Trust me, learn C# or VB.NET (and get some time in the ASP.NET world (either language) as well, as there are many people porting their apps to a web based platform.

Totally depends on what type of job you're looking for. Software company where I used to work only wanted people who were C++ experts. If you're looking for something more webbish, you'll need PHP ASP etc.
