  • As a general rule , they should be 16 in on center. If something extra heavy will be on the deck, like a large flower pot or something, make them 12 in on center in that area.
  • 16" OC (on center) is the most common spacing because it is modular meaning it can be divided into 48" or 4'. However, any spacing will work depending on the span, size, and material of the joist. You did not specify these and if this deck does not meet the building code and your locality finds out about it you will be required to tear it down and do it right in addition to paying a small fine. Usually simple things like decks sometimes your local building inspectors office may have available specs for the general public or if you are unsure they may sell you a book of the uniform building code for about $12. 16" OC is usually fine for pine 2 x 6's if the span does not exceed what is called out for in the code.
  • You will have to consult with your local building codes at your county clerks office. For example: It was legal for me to build a deck using 2x8's placing them 24 inches on center. It is extremely strong and does not wobble or bend under weight.
