It's a work of fiction, but based upon ideas from the Gnostic gospels. The Da Vinci Code asserts that these gospels were deliberately excluded from the Christian Bible because they contradict some of the general understandings about Jesus. For example, the Gnostic gospels show Mary Magdalene as Jesus' wife and the mother of his child. The Da Vinci Code extrapolates on this to conclude that the Holy Grail is, in fact, the bloodline of Jesus. It's an intriguing concept but beyond conjecture there does not appear that there is any concrete evidence of this claim. There is a lot of folklore however. Apparently there are some reports that the daughter Sarah married into a bloodline of Medieval royalty who actually did exist. There are some reports that the church conspired to have the last king of this line murdered in the 5th century. Because of documented corruption of some popes and other Church officials, some may find it believable that these officials would hide any evidence of Mary Magdalene as the wife of Jesus in order to protect their power structure. The Da Vinci Code also tries to interpret the works of Da Vinci as a symbolic message about the secret of Mary Magdalene, but again, while intriguing and having some logical basis, it is a theory. There is no evidence that Da Vinci ever admitted any such thing. There was really a Priory of Sion and there were really Knights Templar, but whether they had a mission regarding the Holy Grail is not proven. http://www.templarhistory.com/templarcode.html Both groups were extremely secretive and didn't leave any records behind. There is nothing but word of mouth regarding the Sang Raal. Unfortunate! The Gnostics were condemned as heretical and their gospels discredited by Constantine, effectively obliterating the idea of MM as the wife of Jesus, and according to Brown's book forming the basis of preceiving women as 2nd class citizens. http://www.mystae.com/restricted/streams/gnosis/secret.html Of course in 1969 the Catholic church reversed its earlier position that MM was a prostitute, but that is a long way from declaring her the wife of Jesus. Being as objective as I can, I wouldn't say the Da Vinci Code is a pack of lies, just another way of looking at the little crumbs of history we have to go on.

Yes, none of it is true. The notion that Jesus was ever married to Mary, one of his children, is blasphemous at its worst. While, Jesus was on the Earth during the New Testament times, Jesus' only goal was to become our Saviour, in order, to save us from our sins. He accomplished this goal in 70 A.D. It's preposterous and blasphemous and false that some have argued that Jesus might have ever been married. Jesus was NOT ever married to any woman. Jesus is our Saviour and therefore, there was never any need for Him to marry. Regarding, the "Gnostic Gospels," these are nothing more than myth that were created by people who did not follow the Bible as the ONLY true Word of God. Basically, those "Gnostics" were heretics and NOT true Christians. Therefore, it can be concluded that both the "Da Vinci Code" & the "Gnostic Gospels" are both FICTION. I hope this helps to answer your question!

The DaVinci Code is based on Dan Brown's misunderstandings of the Gnostic Gospels, and other bits of half-digested information he or his wife picked up. He was unsuccessfully sued for plagiarism over the book. However, the utter crapness of the book in no way devalues alternate views on the Bible or anything else, in spite of appearances.

None of us were around in 'biblical' times so we can't competently debate what is written now about those times as fact OR fiction. There is simply not enough evidence either way. After reading Angels and Demons, however, I didn't believe Brown's theories after identifying inaccuracies in his writings on the Papal election--something that could have been accurately depicted. If misrepresenting modern fact, it is difficult to believe the theories required to buy into the historical accuracy of the remainder of the book. If RJ's comment is correct: "Brown also misstates current historical facts such dealing with Thule, holocaust, etc.', then the Da Vinci code suffers from the same lack of credibility.
