One teacher assigned the book Word Power to build our vocabularies. Talk about a sleeping pill! But I put the Reader's Digest, which I enjoy, on the desk, and read two pages alternatively in each--back and forth, back and forth, to break up the boredom. After several study periods I was done, and got 100 on the test. The next highest grade was 37.

On the other hand, what's wrong with Americans that they think academic subjects have to be made into a game? Studying is work. So is sweeping street, picking strawberries, hoeing potatoes and so forth. I've learned several languages just by resigning myself to the fact that some things are worth doing even if they aren't as exciting as a video game. Language learning is a good example. Everyone is looking for an easy way, such as "going to the country where it's spoken." Well, I live in a country where Russian and Ukrainian are spoken, and I only get better when I study them. Otherwise I stay at whatever plateau I stopped at.

But setting a goal or deadline, and graphing your progress, at least gives you a challenge to work toward, because otherwise one of Parkinson's Laws applies: Work expands to fill the time available.

Unfortunately, studying something that you don't care about just isn't fun. Unless you can somehow convince yourself that you _are_ interested in the subject at hand, the best you can do is try to make it less painful. Study the material that will be presented in class before, not after, the class, and begin any homework the day it is assigned, not one or two days before it is due. Just like anything else worth doing, it's difficult at first but gets easier every time.

Your best bet is to study things you are interested in.

Studying anything, can be a bore or a pleasure. its all in the approach and attitude. each person, has a specialized way to study. listening to your favorite music (down low in the background) worked for me. my brain became a sponge and soaked in the knowledge. my wife use to study nursing, by candlelight. she became a nurse, but it ruined her eyes. my grandaughter listened to rap music on headphones. she was a straight A student.

Everybody is different. what may be right for me, may be entirely wrong for you. experiment. when its study time, the phone and tv are off limits. or, maybe having the television running will be your strategy. try it. try all the above suggestions. maybe one will help.

After (too many?) years studying, some of it alongside a full time job, I've learnt that simple methods are best.
Don't leave it all to the last minute however tempted you are - our brains generally function better and take in more when we spread out the learning- a few hours (even a half hour) every night over a week rather than staying up all night before an exam, which is stressful, tiring and most definetely no fun at all. Not only that, but you'll take in less if you're tired and stressed.
Break up your study into small chunks over the week- plan for at least two evenings off when you do something completely different that you enjoy (cinema, dance class, dodgy wine bar, computer games- whatever) but on the nights you've reserved for study you must actually STUDY - no messing around and procrastinating. Work out everything you'll need to do first (eat dinner, gather your books) and set a time when all that has to be done and you must start work. Work in 15- 20 minute bursts, or slightly longer if you can hack it, and work non-stop. I find making notes, or even copying out what you read in the books is the best way to ensure you process the information rather than just stare at the page taking nothing in. Write it in your own words, use slang, little abbreviations, pictures, even jokes, rather than using dry study language- this has the advantage of providing some valuble cribbing notes written in a style you actually relate to. After you've worked solid for 20 minutes reward yourself with a ten minute break and give yourself a treat (In my undergraduate days this was usually smoking a cigarette, but you can probably think of something healthier- call a friend, or listen to your favourite song) the main thing is you must go back to studying once the 10 minutes is up. Use a stopwatch if you have to. To me the "reward" system has always worked best.
Studying with a friend and quizzing each other can help, but only if you do actually study and don't get carried away with gossipping and suchlike- which most people do- its human nature. Better to agree to meet your friend after you've finished for the evening, as a reward- and actually spend some time on fun things you enjoy.

If you are asking personally, how can I make my own study time fun, try setting goals for yourself "baby steps" (from the movie, what about Bob)
I had great trouble with study, so I can understand what you are taking about. Get an egg timer and set it for, says half an hour. Then the times up, put the books down and have a break. Slowly increase the time on the egg timer until you reach its maximum limit. Also give yourself (or if your parents are helping out too) greater rewards for the length of study time, the quality of the work and the amount completed. A friend of mine in high school gets an X box game if he gets good grades. I hope this is of some help to you.

i find studying with a friend the most effective. if you are no good at a subject, get a fried who IS to help you. likewise, you can explain things to others to help you remember. just don't get carried away. it´s alright to make the occasional joke, but don't forget to work!
