Almost every surname out there is connected to something or someone terrible, so no, I wouldn't change mine for that reason. I would want to know if we were related just for my own curiosity's sake.

Both my maiden name and my married name are fairly common, so I could easily ignore it. My maiden name is my fathers name, and he was adopted, so I know I wouldn't be related. And HIS biological family's names were Kennedy and Carter. No only common, but famous. And STILL, no connection there! My married name is my husbands name, which is an arbitrary last name his mother gave all her kids, with no family connection, so couldn't be related there either.

I would try to find out more since very few people share my surname.
