Question

Help answer this question below.

I have been taking oxycontin for 3 months about 40 - 80 mg a day. When I am out of the drug I experience the withdrawals. My question is if I take 20 mg a day and then 20 mg every other day, can I stop cold turkey without experiencing the withdrawals?

I am no doctor, but I have some experience with weening myself and others off narcotics.

I would say you still suffer from some withdrawals after tapering off, but you need to stage down on smaller doses and a longer time. Coming off a stage 2 drug is not an easy thing to do. I would want professional help in doing it.

    It's time

    Hello,

Dont know if anyone comes to this sight anymore cuz looks like the last post was 2007 - but if by any chance someone thinks they can give me advice please do.

    BigBev,
I was wondering if you were successful in getting yourself off the oxcontin - and if so how you went about it. I am currently on a similar dose as you were (about 80mg daily) Wondering if weening off it gradually was effective - I can not go cold turkey - a couple months ago I went 2 days without and it was the most horrific thing I don't want to be in that position ever again. If you were successful can you let me know what you think the best way for me to tackle this is?

Also to anyone who may have some advice on what sort of dosage I should take to ween off. Something like 40mg a day for one week - down to 20mg the next week. I dunno is that too fast/too slow? Would it be better to go down in incriminates of 10mg? I really have no idea. I have been on oxycontin for a year and a half and I feel like if I don't have a concrete plan to stick to I will cave.

If anyone could give me their insight on all the above it would be amazing.

Also so all the info is there -The drug was not prescribed to me - a year and a half ago my boyfriend fell off my roof 30 feet onto concrete. He broke everything and somewhere along the way I was focusing everything on him...so much that before I realized how powerful this drug is, it was too late. I feel like such an idiot. Extremely ignorant and stupid thing for a smart girl to do.

That's not really cold turkey. Cold turkey is abrupt, just stop. You are trying to ween yourself off. Which I would say is not a terrible way to do it. But I think it all boils down to will power. If you want to you will if you don't you won't. You are past the point whee you can quit without discomfort. Sorry.
