  • Because they can't blame china like the toy makers can. They would need to blame american workers and it doesn't take a genius to know that that's corporate suicide.
  • Cause then we wouldn't have any cars to drive!
  • Cost - Benefit analysis. It is crass to put it that way, but true. Recalling one million cribs costs alot less than recalling one million cars. Three infant deaths, if all are obviously found to be caused by the crib is actually harder to cover up and blame on something else. Car accidents take many occurences to investigate the conditions and circumstances and determine the car is faulty. Easier to cover up. Easier to blame on someone else. There is also a natural, human empathy towards parents of infants and the infants themselves. Society takes a dim view of a manufacturer who willingly, knowingly, carelessly or recklessly puts a baby in harms way. Somehow, that does not always translate to a broader base like "all adults who drive". There is an assumed and inherent risk in buying and operating a motor vehicle. There should be no such risk in putting your baby to sleep in it's crib.
  • They actually do recalls, but they correct the mistakes. My Explorer must be the most recalled vehicle to date. It seems like every time I turn around, it has antoher recall.
  • Because cars don't kill people......it's the people driving that do the most harm.
  • Cars are inherently dangerous and you would expect that people would get hurt and die in automobile accidents. Cribs are presumed safe and there is no real reason why they shouldn't be safe. Therefore defective cribs that kill babies will arouse peoples attention and emotions far more than car accidents making it in the companies interest to recall the cribs and fix them. Nobody will raise an eyebrow about three deaths from automobile accidents. THe companies will do what's in there best interest.
  • A certain number of people driving cars will be killed due to their own stupidity. A recall is done only if it's the fault of the manufacturer. No baby can be blamed for being killed by a crib. Therefore all baby deaths involving the crib are the fault of the manufacturer.
