  • The Monks 1965 Black Monk Time
  • I have to stand on convention. And Say the Ramones They were the first band to be attached to the name "punk". While bands like MC5 and Velvet Underground, were predecessors, these band put them selves in other Genres. It is also well known that the Sex pistols were formed after Malcom Mcdowell saw a Ramones show at CBGBs.
  • Ramones. Though the Brits say the Clash, right?
  • the saints ... aussie band , its a tie between them and the ramones
  • mc5 is what most people say, but there were a lot of "garage rock" bands in the early and mid sixties that could fit that bill. i've even heard people say the who were the godfathers of punk. link wray had some songs that could be considered punk. but the ramones were definitely the first of the genre ;) (edit) link wray was from the late fifties into the early seventies. he died just a few years ago, great guitar player ;)
  • Arguably, the first punk band or simply, the first garage-rock band pioneering that of which would guideline and evolve punk was The Sonics. They formed in 1960 out of Tacoma, Washington. Others noted would be The Velvet Underground, Generation X, Richard Hell and the Voidoids, Iggy Pop and the Stooges, MC5, etc. Fuck the Clash.
  • I'd go with The Monks also and at times The Who really sounded like a punk band that couldn't decide which way they wanted to go. But for real 100% punk I'd go with MC5 and The Ramones.
  • The monks. But the Sex Pistols popularized it.
  • Iggy Pop and the Stooges in 1968.
