In Canada: not directly. A full-time student can claim $400 for each month that he or she is enrolled in a qualified program of study, in addition to the deduction for tuition fees. This deduction is intended to offset any costs incurred while studying, including books and other materials. An allowance of $120 per month is available to part-time students, providing the course runs for at least 3 weeks and has more than 12 hours of instruction per month. Co-operative students cannot make any such claim. The T2202A form send out by the institution(s) in which you were enrolled include the deductable portion of any tuition fees you have paid and the number of qualified months in full- or part-time study.

Not in the US. You can deduct tuition but not books. There is a limit to the amount of tuition you can deduct and there are several different ways to do it. If you use a tax program like taxact.com, it will calculate the best way to do it.
