Very good question, even smarter for asking. The best way for one to do this is to first mark out the area that you want. Clear it so that you can get to work. You will need several supplies for this job. 1) level I would suggest a small one foot one as well as another with a greater reach 6 foot would be good if you can find it 2) rubber mallet 3) shovels both round and flat head. 4) tamper 5) broom The matterials that you will need are... 1) block of your choice. 2) base rock in most places it is sold between 3/8 and 5/8 sizes. DO NOT USE PEA GRAVEL... pea gravel tends to sage over time. 3) Sand, most sands will do for this part. 4) paver sand. 5) braces but not required Process... The first thing that you will need to do is to call you local locator servise because it does require that you do some dig. Once you have, it is time to start your project. Mark out the area that you want to have the bricks at. you will need to dig down to a depth of 5 inchs, if you want it flush with the lawn add the depth of the brick to this. Once you have done this. Take your temper and pound the ground so that it is compacted. The next thing to do is to get your base rock. You will need to get enough for you to be able to cover the area with 3 inchs of rock. Once you have done this take your tamper once again and compact the rock as best as you can. Now that you have done this you are ready to add the sand to your project. You will need the sand there to give you some "wiggle room" as well as some drainage. you will need enough sand to cover your area in 2 inchs of sand. Once you have done this you will need to compact this as well. This is one of the hardest steps in the process. For you will need to make sure that you have it compacted will because if you dont it will run the risk of settling funny. Here is where the level will come in handy. You will want to make the sand as level as possible. For this will be the surface that you will lay your brick upon. Now it is time to lay your bricks. When you first start out it is handy to use a shorter level. Any fine tuning of your bricks can be done with a rubber mallet. this process will be repeated until the job is done. It can be sped up with the use of a larger level. Once you have your brick layed you need to get your paver sand. You will want to use paver sand not just any sand. Because it will not washout or compact as much. Take your broom and brush it one to the brick and fill in the crack in between the brick. at this time some people like to seal it. But I would not recimend it with the cobblestones because your going for the aged look.
