Obsidian is a type of naturally occurring glass, produced from volcanoes when the right kind of lava cools rapidly, efor example by flowing into water. It consists mainly of silicon dioxide. The color of obsidian varies: iron and magnesium can give the obsidian a dark green to black color. Obsidian is commonly used for ornamental purposes. When cut in one direction it is black; when cut across another direction it is gray.
