  • well according to an advert to promote a healthier lifestyle running a mile, cycling a mile, swimming a mile is the same as walking a mile
  • Three miles the distance is the same!
  • I used to be an avid cyclist, and I remember reading somewhere that you'd have to cycle about 3 times as far as a walk to burn the same number of calories. Of course this depends on the terrain, if your tires are inflated, or if you're being chased by a dog.
  • peterpam is right. 3 miles is 3 miles, regardless of how you travel there. But I'm guessing you mean calories? There's no right answer, as it depends on how fast you walk, how fast you cycle, what gear you use on your bike, etc etc However, for pure fat burning, you will need to cycle for longer. This is because for the first ~15 mins of exercise, your body is burning up carbohydrate sources of energy, the glycogen stored in muscles and then the carbs in the bloodstream and stored elsewhere. After this time, the body begins to convert stored fat into glucose to be used by muscles. So, since you cycle faster than you walk, you will spend less (or no) time in the fat burning part of the exercise, compared to walking. This is why, on a recent news programme, they seemed to advocate walking as opposed to running. The logic was flawed, as the runner burned more calories, but less of it came from fat. The runner gets more cardovascular benefit, and had the distance been longer, more fat burning. As it happens, during the exercise, the walker burned more fat. But that is only half the story, leading to a skeweed news report that claimed walking was better than running.
