Two questions in one: Does the amount of traffic help a website with its search engine position? And if it does, does this traffic have to be mainly on the index or can it be on any page?

Naturally the amount of traffic you generate to your site will always be beneficial to you. It is also a good idea to get tracking software that indicates if this is a repeat customer, length of time this person stayed on and what pages they checked out. You do want to direct all incoming traffic to the homepage since this is where you can funnel them into specific categories that will interest the individual. You do have to pay a premium to the major search engines if you want to be listed in the front or a leading position depending upon what industry you are in. It is most advisable if you do this because otherwise, you may not be happy with your placement on the index.
