I always thought it was a measure of distance.

Is this a serious question? A light year is a measure of distance, not time. It's the distance light travels in a vacuum in 1 year. According to wikipedia it's 9,460,730,472,580.8 km http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light_year

A light year is defined as the distance that light travels (in a vacuum) in one year (ie 365 days, 5 hours, 18 minutes etc). In a vacuum light travels at ~186,000 miles per second. A light year is a useful unit of distance, and avoids having to use millions and millions of miles/kilometers.

a light year is the distance that light will travel in a year..it has nothing to do with time..but I guess you could say that there is 1 year in 1 light year.
