The sugar substitute (e.g. nutra-sweet) is what makes the taste unique. Any other difference in ingredients would be to get the flavor closer to the original taste.
You may think of the taste of sugar as "simply sweet", but surprisingly, the taste of sugar is difficult to replicate by artificial sweeteners. Many sweeteners have a bitter aftertaste. The ones that don't are suspected of causing cancer.
Personally I think that diet colas taste pretty awful.
