Matthew 4:5-7 states:
Then the devil took him to the holy city, and made him stand on the parapet of the temple, and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down. For it is written: 'He will command his angels concerning you and 'with their hands they will support you, lest you dash your foot against a stone.'"
Jesus answered him, "Again it is written, 'You shall not put the Lord, your God, to the test.'"
There are a lot of crazy people out there so the Pope likewise uses his God-given common sense and does not put God to the test.
With love in Christ.
If nutbars could take down Jesus, what's a Pope?
Because the non believers may try and kill him and we want to protect him for man's evil.
The bullet-proof glass was introduced after the assassination atempt on John Paul II. And being a messenger of God btw does not act like a bullet-proof vest, or as fire-protection or as knife-protection (see Christianity's long list of martyrs, most of whom interestingly enough lived in the 20th centrury). Actually (not refering to he Pope necessarily now) in many circumstances, old and new, being God's messenger implies being quite a bullet-magnet.
They killed Jesus too. The Pope isn't stupid and he isn't bulletproof.
Despite the fact that he is God's messenger, you can still kill him. With bullets. Thus all the bullet-proofing.
the pope is not just God's Messenger, he's the Successor to the throne of Saint Peter-the first bishop of Rome-which later became the papacy. Jesus told Simon Peter that "you are the rock upon which I will build my church" which is what gives the Holy See it's authority, but remember, the pope, at the end of the day, is not a supernatural being with super powers, he's a man with a calling to God, and the "popemobile" is a device which the faithful use to protect this man from nutcases. BUT HE IS JUST FLESH AND BLOOD AND BY NO MEANS IMMUNE TO BULLETFIRE. And sure we could just say well, hell, if he's God's messenger, God'll protect him and snatch the bullets in mid air and that'll be that, but kids, it doesn't work that way. that's not religion that's sci/fi fantasy make-believe. If we have the ability to provide extra protection to this man who means so much to the faithful, why shouldn't we take it?
Because he really isn't God's messenger
it's hard to deliver messages when you're six feet under
He is protecting himself from the Devils 'representatives' on earth...obviously..
Because he isn't?
'cause miracles just ain't what they used to be...;-)
Their have been assassination attempts on the previous popes. What I want to know is, why is a former Nazi youth, the pope?
His body is still fallible.
Because don't shoot the messenger generally doesn't work when it comes to religious issues.
Because they don't have blind faith! How ironic, the holiest of holies is nothing but a man hoping in something holy but not believing wholey!
Because not everyone has heard the saying, "don't shoot the messenger."
maybe it's because some of his subordinates molest little boys.Or more than likely it is because the world is full of crazies that will kill just to make a name for themselves.
That was the pope's idea, actually.
While he doesn't mind spreading god's word he doesn't want to take a bullet for the big guy.
So as not to be killed by Satan's assassins.
dont get me started on this subject lmao
On the one hand, god provided bullet-proof glass.
On the other hand, what about god's will be done???
Well, just consider what the Catholics believe was done to their God's "Only Son"; do you really think they trust their God to protect one in a long line of figureheads?
But then again, there's also the Catholic belief that Christ's death was part of "God's Plan", so I suppose the Pope has such heavy protection because he wants God's will to be done, just not to him personally.
God invented bullets. God made anti-Christians too.
God's will be done, I guess.
Pope JP 2 had sevral assanation attemps because he spoke out against Communism as well as war and other political issues that the church never decied with before and he visted those people in prison.
If JP 2 didn't have protection would he be able to do all that he did.
The pope heads up the catholic church, nothing more. The pope is not mentioned in The Holy Bible. The pope is not a messenger of God. He is just a man. Alot of people know of him, I would say alot of people don't like him, hence, the bullet proof glass.
Because he is human and as such can die. If there is no messenger in human form then how will the messages 'get through'. The real problem is the sick twisted people who shoot others yo...
Because he has a very expensive hat that needs protecting.
What does the pope wear to sleep?

You're reading If he is really God's messenger, why does the Catholic Pope travel protected by bullet-proof glass?
- which can also be phrased in the following ways:
Comments
Your smug bible quote doesn't apply. We're not talking about suicide, we're talking about 4-inch thick reinforced bullet proof glass. If the Pope really speaks to God, as we are told, God would warn him of any attempts on his life. If he didn't, it would be God's will that the events unfolded without intervention. If the Pope doesn't have faith in God's wisdom, why should his followers?
by tiberseptim on September 18th, 2007
The quote was about putting God to the test. You are not supposed to go around expecting God to make everyting wonderful for you, make sure you have a perfect life and protect you against all harm.
by extragon20 on February 18th, 2008
The Catholic Pope doesn't trust God to know when it is time for him to die. Knowing that, why should we trust the Pope or their God about ANYTHING?
by tiberseptim on February 20th, 2008
I don't know your beliefs, tiberseptim, but suppose for a moment that you believe in some God. If you found out that there was a real possibility someoene would try to kill you, surely you would not be unwilling to take any precautions against the possibility? You would be quite right to do so. It would not show that you did not 'trust God to know when it is time' for you to die. It would be simple common sense on your part, just as it is simple common sense for the Catholic Pope to take some precautions against assassination.
by extragon20 on February 21st, 2008
I would take precautions because I'm not the Pope. I don't speak with God first hand. God doesn't tell me outright "Yes, you're going to die" or "No, you're safe, my son." If he did, I would trust in his judgement and accept his prediction. The Pope HAS that. Or at least, the Catholic church would have you believe. The bullet proof glass tells us that either he doesn't trust in God or he really isn't a prophet. Either way, the church is a lie.
by tiberseptim on February 21st, 2008
tiberseptim, it has been explained to you in a commment on another answer that the Catholic church does not see the Pope as a prophet who is 'the one true prophet of God' as you put it. He does not get constant voices telling him 'Yes you're going to die' or 'No, you're safe, my son', as you put it.
by extragon20 on February 22nd, 2008
Who needs constant voices? Just a check in every now and then. If the Pope has no means of communicating with God, then his place at the head of the Church is meaningless. He is no more venerable or powerful than any of his priests or cardinals. Or *gasp* NUNS.
.
Anyway, this back and forth has gone on long enough with out any progress either way. Neither of us is going to budge and anyone listening in has by now drawn their own conclusions. Good day, sir.

I don't know what you've been reading, but I would be most interested to see any link at all to prove the claim that Catholics believe the Pope to be a prophet who is 'the one true prophet of God'. Furthermore, his claim to be leader of the Church is not founded on some sort of personal hotline to God, any more than leaders of the majority of faiths. You should perhaps try to learn a little more about the subject if you intend to make comments on it, as you seem to have misunderstood the Catholic Christian position on the Pope.

I agree; neither of us has fully accepted the other's point. Thank you for the discussion, and good day to you.
by extragon20 on February 27th, 2008
imacatholic2, It sounds very much like you are putting the pope up there with God? The pope heads up the catholic church, thats all. He is just a human being, like us, and is no closer to God then anyone else is.
